CPSA Chint Power Systems PV Inverters Selected for First Community Solar Farm in South Africa

Dysselsdorp Re-Power 75MW PV Project

Chint Power Solutions has succeeded in securing the first PV inverter supply contract for 75 megawatt (MW) PV open field project with 30% community participation on the farm Van Wykskraal, Dysselsdorp, Oudtshoorn District, Western Cape, South Africa. The project will be entered into the National IPP bidding program, dated for submission in May 2015.

The superior integration and turn-key design of the 1MW/1,26MW integrated PV turn-key design system with all equipment in one container, including 2 x 630kW PV inverters, DC Distribution cabinet, Communications cabinet and auxiliary power supply unit, will be used for this project.

The local content solution for outdoor use with professional Cape Town based factory integration and differentiated plant design, will form the basis to meet special customer needs for this project.

High environmental adaptability and applicability with IP54 protection degree for outdoor use in extreme operational environments, is standard on the container design used in this project. Suitable for locations subject to strong winds, sand storms and/or high altitude installations.

Simple engineering for fast-track station installation ensure that only DC, AC and communication connections are required after container allocation. There is no need to build a dedicated shelter or house. Mounting blocks for the 60 container solutions in this project will be built by local workers.

Chint secured a structured payment system for this project to ensure cash flow assistance for the first 36 month period after commercial operation of the Solar PV Power Plant. “This decentralized approach provides reduced installation and BOS costs, lowers O&M costs and improves system uptime,” said Gert Linde CEO of Chint Power Solutions Africa.

The Dysselsdorp solar farm covers approximately 165 hectares of the farm land and is expected to produce about 152 GWh annually – enough to meet the power needs of about 14,000 homes. As a community-based solar farm, it is the first of its kind in the Klein Karoo area in the Western Cape.
